Embedded & The Tell Tale Cell Phone

May 1 & 2, 2026  |  Charlottesville Opera

Charlottesville Opera’s Wallace Worx is an annual program dedicated to performing modern, accessible English-language opera, proving that opera is as vibrant and deeply human as ever. This year, it’s getting a little dark with a spine-tingling double-bill inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, stage directed by Doug Scholz-Carlson.

Embedded follows veteran news reporter Sylvia Malow (Caroline Worra) as she seeks to maintain her top anchor spot despite the encroaching popularity of up-and-coming starlet, Victoria Reilly (Emily Solo). When a mysterious man named Montresor (Bert K. Johnson) flatters Sylvia and offers to give her a career altering inside scoop she just can't say no even though her spine tingles with an impending sense of doom. Will this be the story that secures Sylvia's reputation in the annals of journalism, or will it be her final broadcast? Based on Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado."

The Tell Tale Cell Phone captures a moment of desperation for Mr. L. Usher (Sam Rachmuth) as he is driven mad by Lenore Heart's (Emily Solo) penchant for talking on her cell phone. In an unspeakable act, he rids himself of his annoyance, but is soon cornered by Inspector Dupin (Brian Wallin) and the Prefect of Police (Bert K. Johnson).
Based on Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart."
